Sridhar Ramu, a chemical engineering graduate from IIT Madras, is widely recognized for his multifaceted journey spanning corporate leadership, social service, and youth empowerment. As one of the earliest contributors to India’s IT revolution, he was the 52nd employee at Infosys, where he worked under the leadership of Narayana Murthy, his first boss. After a distinguished corporate career, he opted for early retirement in 2003, choosing instead to dedicate his life to meaningful social initiatives and community development.
Following his retirement, he transitioned into a full-time role in social service, focusing primarily on education, career guidance, and skill development. Currently serving as the Rotary District 3191 Chairman for the Career Guidance Committee, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the futures of young students. Over the years, he has counselled more than 10,000 students across over 100 schools, offering them clarity and direction during critical academic and career decision-making stages.
He is widely known for designing and conducting impactful programs tailored for students and educational institutions. Among his most notable initiatives are “Margham,” “I Am a Winner,” and “Utkarsh.” “Margham” is a comprehensive career counselling program that provides in-depth guidance to students on choosing appropriate academic paths after the 10th standard and pre-university courses. It equips students with the knowledge required to make informed decisions about their future.
“I Am a Winner” is a motivational program focused on building confidence and enhancing public speaking skills among students. Through this initiative, he empowers young individuals to overcome stage fear and communicate effectively—skills that are increasingly vital in today’s competitive environment. Meanwhile, “Utkarsh” addresses one of the most pressing concerns among students: exam stress. The program offers practical strategies to manage anxiety and maintain mental well-being during examinations. It has received widespread appreciation, particularly among students in the 10th standard and pre-university levels.
Beyond student-focused initiatives, he has also demonstrated a strong commitment to empowering underprivileged communities. He has conducted spoken English classes for 75 underprivileged women, enabling them to improve their communication skills and enhance their employability. Notably, more than 10 participants have successfully secured jobs as a result of this training.
In addition, he has established a free three-month tailoring and skill development center for underprivileged women. This initiative has certified over 40 women, equipping them with practical skills to achieve financial independence. His efforts extend further into employment generation, having spearheaded three large-scale job fairs that resulted in over 500 placements and more than 750 candidates being shortlisted for various roles.
Apart from his professional and social contributions, he actively pursues a range of creative and recreational interests. He is associated with IFRM 3191 as a singer and is also a skilled harmonica player. His artistic pursuits include creating over 25 charcoal portraits, including portraits of five District Governors, which were presented during Rotary Bangalore Lakeside inauguration ceremonies.
He is also an accomplished author, having written the award-winning book “My Daring Pursuit at Poetry,” which has received accolades such as the Emily Dickinson Award and the Golden Wings Award. His passion for fitness is evident in his daily routine, as he maintains a disciplined lifestyle that includes cycling 20 kilometers every day.
On the personal front, he is married to Chitra, an ICWA graduate who is currently a homemaker. The couple has two children. His son, Sachin, is a Computer Science graduate from IIT Madras and the founder of a San Francisco-based startup, Subtrace. His daughter, Samhita, is a graduate in Physiotherapy from St. John’s Medical College and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Loma Linda, California.
Through his diverse contributions, he continues to inspire individuals across generations, exemplifying a life dedicated not only to personal success but also to societal progress and empowerment.
