Dr. Rajeev Kumar: Advancing Excellence in Power Plant Chemistry and Quality Management

Dr. Rajeev Kumar, popularly known as Raj, is a seasoned chemistry professional serving as Senior Manager in the Chemistry Department of NTPC Ltd., one of India’s leading Maharatna public sector enterprises. Since joining NTPC in 2008, he has built a career spanning more than 18 years in power plant chemistry, industrial laboratory management, analytical operations and quality assurance. His professional journey has been marked by technical expertise, continuous learning and consistent recognition for performance excellence.

With a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, he combines strong academic credentials with extensive industrial experience. He also holds B.Sc. and B.Ed. qualifications from the same university and has qualified nationally competitive examinations including CSIR NET-JRF and GATE. During his doctoral research, he published six research papers, establishing a strong foundation in scientific investigation and analytical chemistry.

His professional expertise encompasses power plant chemistry, laboratory operations, quality management, and the characterization and testing of coal and oil. Over the years, he has developed specialized capabilities relevant to thermal power generation and industrial laboratory environments. His commitment to professional excellence has earned him the BUH/CEO/HOP Meritorious Employee Award on five occasions, along with five management appreciation certificates recognizing outstanding work performance.

Continuous professional development has remained an important aspect of his career. He has completed specialized training in Laboratory Quality Management Systems and Internal Auditing under ISO/IEC 17025 for NABL accreditation through the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS), Noida, under the Bureau of Indian Standards. He is also trained as an Integrated Management System Internal Auditor covering ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.

His technical exposure extends across several critical areas of energy and fuel analysis. He has undertaken hands-on training in agro-biomass sampling and characterization for thermal power plant applications through the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy, Kapurthala. He has also received practical training in oil testing and analysis at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, and coal characterization and testing at the CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad. Further strengthening his domain knowledge, he completed professional training in power plant chemistry at NTPC’s Power Management Institute in Noida.

His professional engagement has also extended to national and international knowledge-sharing platforms. He participated as a delegate at the International Conference and Exhibition on Energy and Environment (ENCO 2019), held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, and organized by CSIR-CIMFR. Such participation reflects his interest in emerging developments across energy, environmental management and industrial chemistry.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, he has maintained a strong commitment to social service. In memory of his parents, he supports underprivileged students in his native village of Goth and neighbouring Dhadhot by distributing sweaters, school bags and stationery each year. He has also contributed financially toward the repair and maintenance of the Government School in Goth, supporting better educational infrastructure for rural students.

His approach to life combines professional discipline with social responsibility. Guided by the principles of environmental stewardship, education and community development, he advocates the message, “Save water, conserve nature, save Earth, and prove yourself a true human being.” His personal philosophy, “Educate, Agitate, Organize,” further reflects his belief in knowledge, collective progress and purposeful action.

Through his sustained contributions to power plant chemistry, laboratory quality management and community welfare, he represents a professional profile that connects scientific expertise with social responsibility and public-sector excellence.
