Navtara Sarda: Advancing Justice Through Dedication, Advocacy, and Public Service

Navtara Sarda, a seasoned legal professional with over 26 years of experience, has established herself as a prominent advocate in the Indian legal landscape, particularly in the state of Sikkim. Enrolled with the Bar Council of India in 2001 after completing her BA LL.B. from KLE College, Bangalore, she has built a distinguished career marked by integrity, expertise, and a strong commitment to social justice. Currently serving as the Vice President of the Bar Association of Sikkim (High Court and Subordinate Courts), she continues to play a pivotal role in both legal practice and institutional leadership.

Over the years, she has appeared before multiple judicial forums, including High Courts, District Courts, and various tribunals, representing a diverse clientele. Her areas of practice span criminal law, civil law, family disputes, consumer law, labour matters, and motor accident claims, where she often represents insurance companies. Her extensive experience and in-depth understanding of legal procedures have enabled her to handle complex cases with precision and professionalism.

Beyond courtroom practice, she has been deeply involved in legal aid initiatives and public outreach programs. As a panel lawyer and former retainer advocate under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority, she has actively contributed to promoting legal awareness among marginalized and economically weaker sections of society. Her work has included organizing awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, government institutions, and community centers, focusing on critical issues such as consumer rights, cybercrime, women and child protection laws, and access to justice.

Her commitment to legal literacy extends to grassroots engagement. She has conducted outreach programs in old age homes, ICDS centers, and rural communities, ensuring that vulnerable groups are informed about their rights and the legal remedies available to them. Through seminars, workshops, radio talks, and digital platforms, she has consistently worked to bridge the gap between the legal system and the public.

In addition to her advocacy work, she has played a significant role in training and mentoring. She has conducted structured training programs for school teachers across Sikkim under the “Lessons of Law” initiative, equipping educators with essential legal knowledge to pass on to students. Her involvement in professional development also includes participating in specialized training programs, such as those focused on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act, and contributing as a trained mediator.

As a member of the first batch of trained mediators in Sikkim and the State Coordinator for the Association for India International Mediation & Arbitration Services (AIIMAS), she has actively promoted alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Her mediation expertise complements her litigation practice, offering clients more efficient and amicable solutions to disputes.

Her professional journey also reflects strong leadership within the legal community. Having served in various roles within the Bar Association of Sikkim, including Executive Member and Assistant General Secretary, she has contributed to strengthening institutional frameworks and supporting fellow legal professionals.

Her academic background, which includes a degree in Political Science from Loreto College, Darjeeling, and schooling in reputed institutions in Kalimpong and Sikkim, laid a strong foundation for her legal career. Over time, she has combined academic knowledge with practical experience to build a well-rounded professional profile.

Navtara Sarda’s career stands as a testament to dedication, service, and the pursuit of justice. Through her continued efforts in legal practice, education, and community outreach, she remains committed to empowering individuals with knowledge and ensuring that access to justice is both inclusive and equitable.
